Southern Oregon’s first line of defense against religious bigotry

est. 2020

The Rogue Valley Pepper Shakers was established in March of 2020 by a group of friends in High School. They recognized the unchecked bigotry being spewed outside of local reproductive clinics and LGBTQ+ events by a local religious hate group known as the Rogue Valley Saltshakers. Shortly after establishing the group, Toren (one of the aforementioned High Schoolers) met Sam, who brought in more people and have been countering the local hate group ever since.

We focus on protecting abortion and LGBTQ+ events and spaces.

Our organization dedicates our time to putting ourselves between extremist religious organizations/individuals and the general public. We use a specific set of tactics meant to distract and discomfort our opponents - we've learned these tactics through experience and by watching other organizations excel at countering their own local hate groups through very similar engagement tactics. The RV Pepper Shakers wholeheartedly believe that engagement is the best method of handling these types of people. Some of these engagement tactics include: Playing music, using visual barriers (signs, flags, umbrellas, our bodies) talking, dancing and anything else that could be ridiculously distracting to someone yelling at clinic doors or an event entrance.

We believe engagement with protesters is the most effective tactic.

Engagement has shown to be more effective than silently standing by while religious extremists verbally assault patients, staff, and the general public - we know from experience. While non-engagement policy has its place in the world, using our voices shifts the protesters focus while people can quietly slip past us. More times than not the conversation or distractions we create fully immerse protesters and cause them to lose focus of their original goals.
